Why the yearly charge feels like a surprise
A monthly plan shows up on every statement, so you notice it. An annual plan shows up once, and then disappears for eleven months. By the time it renews, the reason you bought it may be long gone.
The charge is usually larger too, because it covers a whole year at once. That is what makes it sting: a forgotten monthly fee is small, a forgotten annual one rarely is.
Find the renewal date
Search your email for the original receipt, using words like receipt, annual, yearly, renews or your subscription. The receipt or the account's billing page usually shows the next renewal date.
Then check your card and bank statements from roughly a year back. A single large charge from a company you rarely think about is a good candidate.
Turn off auto-renew, not just the reminder
Most services let you switch off automatic renewal in the account or billing settings while keeping access until the paid year ends. Look for Cancel subscription, Turn off auto-renew or Manage plan.
If the plan was bought through the App Store or Google Play, cancel it there instead, since that is who bills you. Our guide to cancelling app subscriptions shows where to look on each phone.
Put the date somewhere you will see it
If you want to keep the plan for now, add a calendar reminder a week or two before the renewal date, so you can decide on purpose rather than by default.
Keep a short list of every yearly plan with its renewal month. It takes five minutes and turns a surprise into a choice.
If it already renewed
Contact the company soon after the charge and ask whether they can cancel and refund the renewal. Policies differ, so read their terms and ask politely and quickly.
If the company won't respond and you believe the charge shouldn't have happened, your card issuer can explain your options for disputing it or stopping future payments.
The one renewal that tells you up front
Forget Your Credit Card is monthly, not annual, and it says exactly what it is. You pick an amount from $1 to $1,000, Stripe bills it, and confirmed payments count toward a public Lifetime board if you choose to appear.
Nothing comes back and nothing is hidden. STOP FORGETTING cancels at the end of the current paid period.
