Cancel first, then ask
Before asking for money back, stop the next charge. Cancel the plan in the account settings, or in the App Store or Google Play if that is who bills you, and keep the confirmation email.
A refund request goes better when the subscription is already cancelled. It shows you are not trying to keep the service for free.
Ask the company directly, and quickly
Contact support soon after the charge. Say plainly that you forgot to cancel, that you haven't used the service since the renewal, and that you have now cancelled. Ask whether they can refund the latest charge.
Refund policies differ and many companies don't have to say yes, so read their terms and stay polite. A short, specific message sent within days of the charge has a much better chance than one sent months later.
If the App Store or Google Play billed you
Apple handles refund requests for App Store purchases and subscriptions at reportaproblem.apple.com. Sign in with the Apple Account that was charged and pick the subscription.
Google Play has a refund request option in your Google Play order history. Depending on the purchase and how long ago it was, Google may pass the request to the app's developer, who decides.
When to talk to your card issuer
If the company won't answer, or you believe the charge shouldn't have happened at all, for example because you cancelled and it charged you anyway, your card issuer can explain your options for disputing it.
Have your cancellation confirmation and the charge date ready. A dispute is for charges that were wrong, not for ones you simply regret, so try the company first.
Make it the last time
Once the money is sorted, make a short list of every subscription you pay for and when each one renews. Our guide to finding forgotten subscriptions shows where to look.
For yearly plans, put a reminder in your calendar a week or two before the renewal date, so the next decision is on purpose.
The one subscription you can't forget by accident
Forget Your Credit Card is a monthly payment that says exactly what it is. You pick an amount from $1 to $1,000, Stripe bills it, and confirmed payments count toward a public Lifetime board if you choose to appear.
Nothing comes back and nothing is hidden. STOP FORGETTING cancels at the end of the current paid period.
