THINGS PEOPLE FORGET

What is subscription fatigue?

Every service is only a few dollars a month. That is the whole problem.

The short definition

Subscription fatigue is the worn-out feeling of having too many recurring payments to keep track of. Streaming, music, cloud storage, apps, news, delivery, software: each one is small and sensible on its own, and together they become a list nobody wants to read.

It is less about the money than about the attention. Every subscription is a small decision you agreed to make again every month, and most of the time you don't.

What causes it

More things are sold as subscriptions than used to be. Software that came in a box, shows that came on one channel and features that came with the product are now separate monthly plans.

The prices are also designed to feel small. A few dollars a month rarely triggers the pause a single large purchase would, so plans pile up quietly. Free trials that need a card add more, because each one renews unless someone remembers to cancel.

How it shows up

People notice it in a few familiar ways: a charge on the statement they can't place, paying for two services that do the same thing, keeping a plan because cancelling feels like more work than paying, or simply not knowing what they spend each month on things that renew.

Some of those forgotten charges have a name. Small recurring payments nobody remembers agreeing to are often called gray charges.

How to ease it

Make the list once. Check your phone's app store subscriptions, PayPal automatic payments and a couple of months of card statements, and write down every recurring charge with its renewal date.

Then keep only what you'd sign up for again today. Rotating services works well: keep one streaming plan at a time and switch when you've watched what you wanted. When you start a free trial, set a reminder for the day before it ends at the moment you sign up.

The subscription that admits it

Forget Your Credit Card is a subscription that skips the pretending. You pick a monthly amount from $1 to $1,000, Stripe bills it, and you get nothing back except a place on a public Lifetime board if you choose to appear.

There is no trial, no bundle and nothing to win. STOP FORGETTING cancels at the end of the current paid period. It is the one monthly charge you know exactly why you have.
